Who and what is counted

ACS B11009 describes the relationship between the householder and their spouse or unmarried partner. Its universe is all households, including those without a couple. A household is counted once; people are not divided by two.

Relationships among other household members, partners living apart and other romantic relationships are not comprehensively captured by this table. Do not present it as the share of everyone who has a partner.

Comparing households over time

The release uses consistent one-year ACS estimates for 2021–2024. The explorer shows state uncertainty and uses a common year. Cohabitation by age requires a different, separately reviewed population table and is outside this release.
