What “median age at first marriage” means
ACS B12007 estimates the median from the distribution of marital status by age among the population aged 15 to 54. It is an indirect estimate of first-marriage timing, not a survey of only people who married recently.
The source reports male and female categories. These labels describe the published table; they are not an inference about gender identity or sexual orientation.
Small differences need context
Whiskers show 90% margins of error. A state with a slightly larger estimate is not necessarily statistically different. The explorer defaults to a shared reference year and keeps national estimates separate from state medians.
The national median is the published national estimate. Averaging the state medians would not reproduce it.
